The second semester of most schools academic calendar just
begun, IT or SIWES usually takes place during this period.
What is IT or SIWES?
IT means Industrial training and SIWES means Student Industrial
Work Experience Scheme. IT is usually for about a period of one year, which is
usually undertaken by Polytechnic Students, While SIWES is for a period of 6
months, undertaken by Undergraduate University Students.
SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the problem of
lack of adequate practical skills needed for employment in industries by
Nigerian graduates of tertiary or higher institutions.
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is
the accepted skills training programme, which forms part of the approved
minimum academic standards in the various degree programmes for all the
Nigerian universities. It is an effort to bridge the gap existing between
theory and practice of engineering and technology, science, agriculture,
medial, management and other professional educational programmes in the
Nigerian tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to machines
and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safe-guarding the work
area s and workers in industries and other organization.
Oftentimes many IT and SIWES students get carried away
especially in large and well established organizations during their training, thereby
forgetting and abandoning their primary objective of being there and this isn’t
really the right approach to train but it should rather be a time to get acquainted
with working environments and acquiring knowledge in their respective
disciplines.
Students undergoing such trainings are expected to be of good conducts,
taking instructions from their tutors and respective heads as well as working
as a team. This is one part of it.
Now most students are so anxious about working and having a
break from school that they either get fat during their I.T days or get really
skinny.
They grow excessively fat and sometimes unhealthy due
excessive eating or thin due to so much work stress and ignoring to eat. Staying in between which is a Healthy state
is our goal.
So here are tips to get you through and also keep you
healthy during your industrial training days.
1. Plan your schedule; planning your schedule is a great
start to get you started. Work days is usually from Monday to Friday, which is
usually 5 days in a week.
2. Wake up early, get to work on time, try not to miss
meals, eat more food and less junk.
3. Establish a good work ethic.
4. All work without play makes jack a dull boy and Sade a dull girl *hahaha*; try to unwind during
weekends.
5. Be creative; learn a craft, this can be helpful to you in
future or begin that dream you have being nurturing in your heart , there is no
perfect time... if all is in your favour why not recreate your schedule and
start now. ‘Am still young’, is a Cliché. Remember; starve your distractions, feed your Focus.
6. Lastly, fill your logbook on time. Don't wait till the
end of i.t to start filling. You would spare yourself less stress and more
time.
